1 - Starting the SimpleDesktop Server In order to connect to a remote machine, that machine must be running the SimpleDesktop Server. Download SimpleDesktop onto the remote machine and perform the following:
- (on Windows)run sdesktopserv.exe
- (on other platforms)run sdesktopserv.sh
- You will be prompted for a user - you should add a user now and remember the details
- Make a note of the 4 numbers that appear in the title bar (e.g. 192.168.8.99
)
- Minimize the server window
2 - Connecting to the SimpleDesktop Server Now that you have the SimpleDesktop Server running on the remote machine, you are ready to connect to it from your local machine.
- (on Windows)run sdesktop.exe
- (on other platforms)run sdesktop.sh
- Enter the 'Connection' menu and select 'New Connection'
- Enter a 'Site Name' such as the name of the remote computer
- Enter the username of the user you created on the server
- Enter the password for the user you created on the server
- Enter the IP address of the remote machine (the 4 numbers with dots you took note of - e.g. 192.168.8.99
)
- Advanced:
If you have set up your server to upload it's IP address or your router's IP address you can enter the uploaded web page address in here and SimpleDesktop will automatically fetch your server's IP address from the uploaded web page (e.g. http://mywebspace.com/public_html/ipaddress.html
)
- Select 'Save Site' - this will save the remote machines connection details (except the password)
- Select 'Connect'
- SimpleDesktop will now connect to the remote machine - you will see a progress bar at the bottom of the window
3 - Controling the remote machine Now that you are connected to the remote machine you can control it. SimpleDesktop will automatically fetch the remote screen and send your keypresses and mouse events to the remote machine.
TIP: hold down 'Alt' and left-click or drag the mouse on the remote screen area - this method of jumping and sliding around the remote screen makes navigating a remote screen in a small window a breeze.
