Tutorial - IP Upload (DHCP Dynamic IP addresses)

  1. Set up the SimpleDesktop Server
  2. Turn on Scheduled IP Uploads
  3. Fetch the right IP address
  4. Set the upload frequency
  5. Configure the FTP Server details
  6. Connect to the server using the IP Upload page auto-fetch

1 - Set up the SimpleDesktop Server

2 - Turn on Scheduled IP Uploads

  • To configure your scheduled IP uploads you must first turn on the feature.
  • Check the 'Upload IP address to FTP server (as scheduled)' checkbox at the top of the panel.

3 - Fetch the right IP address

  • If you connect directly to the internet (e.g. via a USB modem of some kind) you will want to upload the server host's ip address.
  • If you connect to the internet via a router or you are part of a network then you will want to upload the Router's WAN IP address.
  • To fetch to local computer's IP address select 'Get this computer's IP address'
  • To fetch your router's WAN IP Address, select 'Get a router web page' and enter the web address of your router's web page in the text field next to it.
  • When you've configured the IP fetching to your satisfaction, click the 'Test' button to try it out.
  • If the IP fetch was successful you will see a green tick and a list of fetched IP addresses next to the Test button.

4 - Set the upload frequency

  • SimpleDesktop server will upload your fetched IP addresses to the web page you specify at the frequency you specify.
  • You can set the frequency of the upload to anything you like simply by typing in a different number into the 'Upload Every' N 'hours' text field.
  • If you want to upload your IP address more frequently than every hour just enter a multiple like 0.5 for every half hour or 0.25 for every 15 minutes.

5 - Configure the FTP Server details

  • SimpleDesktop can upload your IP address to any standard FTP server.
  • Many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) provide web space to their subscribers. If your ISP does not provide web space for you then free web space is easily available on the internet. Try this search if you're not sure where to look.
  • Once you have your web space and your FTP server details, you can add them into the FTP Server section.
  • The last text field in this group 'FTP Path' specifies the path on the FTP server where you would like to generate the HTML uploaded web page. This will usually be something like '/public_html/ipaddress.html'
  • Once you've configured everything to your satisfaction, click the 'Test' button to make sure everything works.
  • SimpleDesktop will fetch your IP addresses and upload them to the FTP server while you wait. If everything is successful you should see a green tick and a success message beside the Test button.
  • When SimpleDesktop has uploaded your IP address you can navigate to it in your web browser to check that it works OK.
  • Once you have configured your settings and tested them, remember to click 'Save Settings' at the bottom of the screen to get your server to start it's upload schedule.

6 - Connect to the server using the IP Upload page auto-fetch

  • Once you have successfully uploaded your IP address and can find it in your browser you can have your SimpleDesktop fetch your server's IP address from the uploaded page.
  • This saves you every having to use your browser to check what your server's IP address is today.
  • When specifying a new connection in your SimpleDesktop client New Connection dialog, simply enter the web address of the uploaded page instead of an IP address for your server.
  • SimpleDesktop will grab the IP addresses from the uploaded page and connect to it.
  • If SimpleDesktop finds and uploads multiple IP addresses, the SimpleDesktop client will try each one until it finds the correct IP address.
